Equipping a workforce to meet new demands

This article appeared in the Barking & Dagenham Press on the 2nd March 2022. A Barking And Dagenham Press news article about the new CyberHub SOC at Barking & Dagenham College

Here Zoe Richardson explains how to train and upskill in readiness for the new industries that are arriving to Barking and Dagenham.

Like everyone else. I’ve been watching with interest the plans and projects that are taking place in the borough.

It’s exciting to know that we’ll soon have the facilities to cater for new industries and the prospects that this presents. Already steeped in a strong industrial heritage, this is the chance to begin another chapter putting the area on the map as the heart of new industries.

The emerging industries and technologies that we will begin to see here can only grow however if they have the right people with the right skills within them. It is why further education providers have looked to the key market players to really understand what they need from a workforce. It’s also why the borough is home to the East London Institute of Technology (ELioT). The first of its kind in England and a major asset to a community looking to take centre stage within these industries.

For those keen to take advantage of these potential new jobs and make themselves more employable, getting those skills will be a priority and it’s easier to do than you might think. There are plenty of opportunities to upskill. and importantly for free. At the ELIoT at Barking & Dagenham College, we’ve been working in partnerships with leading industry experts to come up with a range of relevant, impactful training programmes that will help adults in work in to stay relevant and boost their career prospects.

Currently we are running free in work training courses in electrical vehicles, cyber security and virtual production. Ranging from one day to 10 weeks, these courses will provide valuable training and are all industry areas which are growing and are going to be in demand.

We have the opportunity to be at the forefront of industry need. It’s truly an exhilarating time for the borough and for the workforce within it. There is no better time to grab the bull by the horns and push forward in a career in industries that are blossoming. There is nothing stopping this borough from becoming a pioneer within these sectors.
